Best Lullabies for Singing Your Child to Sleep

Parents have been singing their children to sleep since the dawn of man. There is something soothing about the human voice lifted in song that relaxes and reassures children. Crooning to your baby as he nurses or when he is fussy comes as naturally to parents as rocking their child. The close bond that forms between you and your child as you murmur soft lullabies into his ear makes bedtime lullabies a favorite part of the bedtime routine.

Children provide a rapt audience for our bedtime warbling. They aren’t critical if we stray off pitch or substitute a lot of “la-la-las” when we forget the words. It is the rhythmic sound of our voice that they cling to as they drift off to dreamland. Words and music to traditional lullabies are available on the internet, but any melodic song sung quietly can be used as a lullaby. Some parents make up their own words; others stick to la-la-la. Many find it helpful to sing along to a lullaby CD. Turning on the Nighty Night Bedtime Melodies CD as you tuck your child in and leave the room continues to soothe your child as he falls asleep.

Here are 10 favorite lullabies:
